Nigeria: 350,000 Girls to be Vaccinated Against Human Papillomavirus

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) encompasses a group of over 200 different viruses, some of which cause common skin warts, while others can lead to cervical cancer. Vaccination against HPV, primarily recommended for preteens, has proven to be an effective tool in preventing infections by the most harmful types of this virus. In a significant health initiative, Nigeria is set to launch a major vaccination campaign.

Under the aegis of the Yobe State government, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and funded by Canada’s Global Initiative for Vaccine Equity, the campaign targets 350,000 girls aged 9 to 14. The vaccination will take place in 565 educational facilities across the state, as well as through community teams who will also visit camps for out-of-school girls.

During the launch ceremony held at the Government Girls College in Damaturu, the representative of the Governor’s wife, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ya Jalo Badama, affirmed the vaccine’s effectiveness and safety. She emphasized that extensive research and clinical trials have been conducted to ensure the vaccine’s tolerance and effectiveness against HPV.

Moreover, Habeed Yinka, representing the WHO State Coordinator, specified that the organization would spend over $50,000 to support this initiative. This funding will cover pre-implementation training, the campaign’s execution, and post-campaign checks, thus ensuring the program’s flawless execution.

The Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr. Babagana Machina, represented by the Director of Immunization, Dr. Umar Chiroma, announced that the HPV vaccination would be integrated into the state’s routine vaccination program starting in 2024. This integration aims to reduce mortality related to cervical cancer, which remains a major cause of death among women.

Finally, a call was made for women over the age of 14 to undergo HPV testing before receiving the vaccine. This move is part of a broader effort to improve health indices in the state, particularly in maternal and child health, under the vigorous leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni. This vaccination campaign marks a significant step in enhancing public health and preventing long-term diseases in Nigeria.
