Nigerian writers, united under the banner of Writers for Democratic Change (WfDC), have recently issued a passionate appeal to President Bola Tinubu to take concrete steps towards the welfare of citizens affected by poverty and other pressing issues. In a statement released by their coordinator, Wole Adedoyin, the group highlighted the growing difficulties faced by millions of Nigerians and urged the current administration to pay particular attention to these pressing concerns.
Adedoyin emphasized the urgent need to implement innovative economic policies aimed at stimulating job creation, promoting agricultural production, and countering the currently rampant inflation. According to him, the Nigerian people are under immense pressure, stemming from a paralyzed economic situation, persistent insecurity, and dilapidated infrastructure. The group stressed that basic necessities such as food, clean water, and healthcare have become inaccessible for a significant portion of the population.
The report from the World Bank, cited by the group, is alarming: over 90 million Nigerians, nearly half of the population, live below the national poverty line. This reality, coupled with steadily rising inflation, is eroding the purchasing power of families and further plunging them into hardship. The group also highlighted the growing crisis of food insecurity, with millions of people struggling to meet their basic food needs.
The writers pointed out the devastating impact of insurgency in the northeast of the country and criminal activities nationwide on the safety and security of Nigerians. These disturbances displace entire communities, disrupt livelihoods, and create a pervasive climate of fear. Additionally, the underfunded and overwhelmed Nigerian healthcare system leaves millions vulnerable to preventable and treatable diseases.
The group emphasized the need for immediate action on multiple fronts, urging President Tinubu to seize the historic opportunity presented to him to unite the nation and lead Nigeria towards a better future. Among the specific measures recommended, the group highlighted the importance of increasing funding for healthcare and education, thereby ensuring their quality and accessibility for all Nigerians.
The writers also called for increased priority to be given to infrastructure development, emphasizing the need to provide reliable energy, improve transportation networks, and facilitate access to clean water and sanitation. Despite considerable challenges, the group highlighted the undiminished spirit of the Nigerian people, characterized by creativity, determination, and resilience. However, they underscored that these qualities require strong and decisive leadership to be fully realized.
