The attempt by Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi, to reduce his 11-year prison sentence encountered a major obstacle with the rejection of his request by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Los Angeles, United States. Despite his arguments asserting his good behavior in detention, the Court upheld his initial sentence.
Convicted in 2022 for money laundering and a series of online scams totaling tens of millions of dollars, Abbas had filed a petition to appeal his sentence in November 2022. This move followed an assessment of his chances of success, but the appellate judges upheld their initial stance.
During his incarceration, Abbas engaged in activities aimed at demonstrating his remorse and improvement, including attending training courses and actively participating in cleaning prison facilities. Despite these efforts, the appellate judges confirmed the previous court’s decision.
The rejection of his sentence appeal came shortly before a viral video sparked outrage in Nigeria, purportedly showing Abbas organizing a party while in detention. This controversy heightened debates about prison sentences and the conduct of convicts.
Meanwhile, another player in online fraud, Olalekan Jacob Ponle, also known as “Mr. Woodberry,” attempted to reduce his eight-year prison sentence, arguing that his sentence was miscalculated. Ponle, an alleged accomplice of Hushpuppi, pleaded guilty to multiple charges and agreed to return millions of dollars from frauds.
