The Nigerian singer, renowned for her captivating voice and hit songs, is making her acting debut in the movie “Water and Garri.” Set to release on Amazon Prime Video this year, this production from Everything Savage and Unbound Studios marks a significant turn in the star’s already impressive career.
Tiwa Savage, whose real name is Tiwatope Savage, had a remarkable international journey before becoming a leading figure in Afrobeats. Born on February 5, 1980, in Lagos, Nigeria, she moved to London at the age of 11, where she was exposed to various musical genres. After completing her high school education, she pursued a music career in the United States, studying music management at the Berklee College of Music. Before launching her solo career, she worked as a backup singer for famous artists like George Michael and Mary J. Blige.
“Water and Garri” is directed by Meji Alabi and joins the rich Nollywood lineup on Prime Video Nigeria, which already includes titles such as “Gangs of Lagos” and “SHE Must Be Obeyed.” The film is a drama that tells the story of Aisha, played by Savage, an ambitious fashion designer who returns to her native country after a long absence. Faced with significant changes and personal challenges, Aisha must navigate tumultuous waters to reconnect with her past and face her own scars.
Tiwa Savage’s solo career took off in 2010 with the release of “Kele Kele Love.” Her unique style, blending Afrobeats rhythms with influences from R&B, soul, and hip-hop, quickly won over fans. With acclaimed albums like “Once Upon a Time,” “R.E.D,” and “Celia,” she has made an indelible mark in the music industry. In addition to her musical successes, Tiwa is known for her advocacy for women’s and children’s rights, earning her international recognition.
The film “Water and Garri” was shot in neighboring Ghana and features an impressive blend of cinematography and storytelling.
