Davido Announces Legal Action After April Fools’ Prank

Nigerian singer-songwriter Davido finds himself at the center of controversy following an April 1st article falsely claiming he had been arrested for drug-related offenses. In a strong reaction to this prank, the 31-year-old artist expressed his intention to take legal action against the creators of this misleading publication, which quickly spread, leading to a flood of concerned calls from his fans and acquaintances.

In a statement shared on the X platform, Davido criticized the recklessness with which such serious accusations of international crimes were fabricated. The Afrobeats hitmaker, a three-time Grammy Award nominee, emphasized the baselessness of these allegations, confirming his safe return to Nigeria after performing in Uganda and Kenya.

Disregarding the tradition of April Fools’ jokes, Davido highlighted that he has never been arrested in his native Nigeria, his residence in the United States, or in any of the many countries where he has performed throughout his successful career. The artist, whose real name is David Adedeji Adeleke, expressed his outrage at how easily false information can spread, affecting the reputation and personal life of the targeted individuals.

In his defense, Davido announced that his lawyer was taking the necessary legal steps against the media responsible for this misinformation. This move aims not only to clear his name but also to highlight the dangers of spreading fake news, especially when it involves sensitive topics like criminal accusations.

The prank, initially published by K24 TV, was also labeled as “fake news” by Kenya’s directorate of criminal investigations, which shared the story on social media. This case underscores the challenges faced by public figures in a media landscape where the lines between humor and irresponsibility seem increasingly blurred.
