Trump fined $9,000 for contempt of court

Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, has been fined $9,000 for contempt of court during his trial in New York. This decision was made by Judge Juan Merchan, who found that Trump had violated his prohibition against targeting witnesses and jurors.

The case, involving undisclosed payments to a former adult film star during the 2016 presidential campaign, is already in its third week of trial. The judge made it clear that he would not tolerate further violations from Trump and even threatened incarceration in case of recurrence.

This conviction stems from several incidents during the trial. On the first day, the prosecution requested the judge to sanction Trump for his virulent remarks against certain witnesses, including Stormy Daniels and his former lawyer Michael Cohen. These repeated attacks on key prosecution witnesses raised concerns about the fairness of the trial.

The prosecution came back several times, pointing to Trump’s social media posts where he continued to attack witnesses and question the jury’s impartiality. By calling Michael Cohen a “serial liar” and relaying unfounded allegations that progressive activists had infiltrated the jury, Trump cast doubt and disrupted the trial’s proceedings.

These actions had direct consequences on the trial, with one juror even deciding to step down after expressing concerns for her safety. These incidents prompted the judge to take firm action against Trump, fining him $1,000 per violation, totaling nine violations.
